Virginia offers three classes of contractor licenses: Class A, Class B, and Class C, each determining the monetary value of projects that can be undertaken.

Insurance and Bonding Mandates
While Virginia generally does not mandate specific amounts of general liability insurance for contractors at the state level, it is highly recommended and often required by project owners or for obtaining permits. Most contractors find it prudent to carry at least $1,000,000 in general liability protection. Additionally, if a roofing contractor employs two or more individuals, Virginia law requires them to carry Workers' Compensation insurance.
For Class A and Class B contractors, a $50,000 contractor license surety bond may be required as an alternative to demonstrating the minimum net worth.
